Equation and what the numbers mean
Predicted resting energy expenditure (kcal/day) = 10 × weight in kg + 6.25 × height in cm − 5 × age in years + coefficient. The published male coefficient is +5 and female coefficient is −161. These coefficients reflect groups used in the original equation; they are not a measurement of an individual or a statement about gender identity.
Estimated maintenance = predicted resting expenditure × chosen activity multiplier. The menu values are transparent scenarios, not a validated assignment from your job title or a count of weekly workouts. Resting expenditure is not total daily expenditure and is not a minimum safe intake.
Who should use a different approach
This simple equation is for adults and excludes pregnancy/breastfeeding and situations requiring a clinical nutrition plan. It cannot account fully for growth, illness, disability, medications, body composition or changes during weight loss. Discuss individual goals with a qualified clinician when those factors matter.
The NIDDK Body Weight Planner uses a more detailed dynamic model. This tool does not reproduce it and does not predict a date when you will reach a weight.
